2nd Fire Engine is Dementia Friendly

11th June 2018

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and the Alzheimer’s society: Working together for safer communities

On Thursday the 14th June 2018, 0930hrs at Skipton fire station, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue will be unveiling the newly wrapped fire engine in support of the Alzheimer’s society.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are supporting the initiative ‘dementia friend’s and as part of that support several fire engines are being wrapped to help support the awareness of this cause, along with the signing of a dementia friendly charter:

The date is also Alzheimer’s cupcake day to which in conjunction with the unveiling of the appliance we will be holding a coffee morning in support of the charity.

This is the second North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service fire engine to be dementia friendly wrapped, with a launch event having been held for the Richmond fire engine in May. You can read more about that here

Dementia Friendly Charter

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service hereby pledges to support people living with dementia in North Yorkshire and the City of York. The Service is aware of its responsibility to the community, and it is our intention to adhere to this ‘Dementia Friendly’ Charter with an aim of improving our level of engagement with those that live with dementia and the people that provide support. To maintain our Dementia Friendly status the Service will ensure that:

• We educate our staff in dementia awareness, and to become ‘Dementia Friends’, with new members of staff trained as soon as practicable.

• We will create a specialist network of staff that are trained in dementia awareness, and who can provide extra support and advice to colleagues when required

• All NYFRS personnel will commit to following the ‘Dementia Friendly Referral Protocol’.

• We display the ‘Working to become Dementia Friendly’ logo on fire appliances and other vehicles, to illustrate our dementia friendly status. We will uphold skills requirements to allow engagement with the public.

• We will engage with partner agencies to increase awareness of dementia within the community.
