Fire Cadets

The Young Fire Fighters BTEC qualification has been developed to make a positive difference to the safety of the local community through the teaching of fire service skills to young people.child climbing a ladder

This will enable them to appreciate the qualities of a good citizen and to develop themselves through an understanding of their roles and responsibilities in society.

The course is delivered in two ways, through schools and evening sessions on fire stations.

With Schools

Working with schools, the Service delivers a BTEC Level Two Certificate directly into the school as part of the curriculum. The qualification is called 'Fire Services in the Community' and is built up of a number of modules covering subjects such as:

  • Leadership
  • Hose
  • Pumps
  • Extraction Techniques
  • Fire Safety
  • Operational Response
  • Science of Fire

The course is delivered over a period of one year, with students attending the local fire station one day each week.

Evening Sessions on fire stations

The programme can also be delivered over two years, with students attending evening sessions at the local fire station for two hours each week. Students are required to complete a portfolio, in which they collect evidence during the course to show their knowledge and understanding.

The scheme runs at the following fire stations; Selby, Skipton, Bentham, Grassington, Northallerton and Scarborough (please note the schemes at Skipton and Grassington do not result in the BTEC qualifcation).
